Who’s that girl? It’s Jess! No, wait…It’s Zooey? Zooey Deschanel!
I’m sure many Zooey Deschanel fans have been watching this 4D (4 dimensional, loose meaning is “out there”) girl strut her stuff on her new show, “New Girl.” But what makes her stand out from the rest of Hollywood isn’t just her pretty girl next door, her signature bangs, her 4D tactics and actions, or her amazing voice.
Zooey Deschanel’s wardrobe has actually grabbed the attention of many fashionistas. She has brought vintage back with an upgrade! She’s considered to be a “hipster” (according to Urban Dictionary: “Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20′s and 30′s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter”). They are also known for their fashion sense and love for vintage clothing. With the way that Zooey wears it, things no longer look like they belongs in the 1950s, but clothes you won’t mind rocking on a day out.
Her fashion style usually consists of a couple of “staple” items: some kind of cute hair accessory, cinched waist dress or top and shirt combination, tights, and either flats or heels. Because of these things, she resembles the beautiful “girl next door” (think “500 Days of Summer”) even more and she rarely has any “down” days.
First, let’s start with the hair accessory. Many girls tend to forgo hair accessories because it feels like “too much trouble” and it’s so hard to get those things to stay the way you want! I definitely know how that feels. But these hair accessories can actually transform your whole look and draw attention to your face. Now I don’t know how much time Zooey actually spends on her hair but it looks like something that many of us can do because it’s simple yet so stylish. Most of the time, it’s the accessories and little details that count. Try putting on a headband or sweeping your hair into a side bun for a day—I’m pretty sure you’ll get some sort of compliments from your girl friends (it’s amazing how much they notice).
Zooey is also never without her skirts and dresses. The important point here is that she never puts on just any random skirt or dress. She always wears ones that flatter her. Many of her dresses have a cinched waist at the natural waistline and she also wears many A-line and dresses that are fitted on top but pulls out slightly from the waist. It’s the same idea with tops and skirts combinations. The A-line dress and cinched waist allows her to look slender and dainty without appearing too thin.
Next, I’m going to talk about Zooey’s signature dark tights. One of the great things about tights is that…yes, there’s the obvious “keep your legs warm,” but it can also make your legs appear slimmer than they actually are. It’s a kind of optical allusion—if it works for clothes, why not tights too, right? Sometimes she goes for bolder ones like an opaque red in a photo shoot, and some of the stuff she wears on her show “New Girl” is pretty unusual too. But they’re definitely eye catching and add a pop of color to any outfit. They also give your dresses a longer life span in the year and you don’t have to worry about frozen popsicles legs in the chillier Fall days and during freezing Winter! Plus, she always keeps it classy by wearing skirts and dresses that extend past her fingertips. That’s another important aspect of “Zooey style.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Zooey Deschanel wear a pair of sneakers in any of her pictures, and it’s pretty amazing what a pair of flats and heels can do for your look. They instantly make an outfit (and the girl wearing them) much more feminine. Of course, I’m not discriminating against sneakers, but in comparison, a pair of flats or heels is definitely more chic and Zooey is a pro at rocking them.
